On Sunday, I had the treat of hearing Opera Creole for the first time. They are an opera troupe dedicated to “celebrating the African American contribution to Opera in New Orleans!”. Their performance at the Jewish Community Center opened and closed with an excerpt from Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha and even included a sample from New Orleans’ own Louis Moreau Gottschalk. For those that can’t wait to experience more New Orleans opera, Bon Operatit! will be “performing” this Wednesday (August 14th) in the Puccini Bar of the Four Points Sheraton on Bourbon Street. Start time is 7:00 P.M. I have to use the word “performing” loosely because it’s mostly hoisting a glass with some fine live opera to set the mood. Their theme is “Mozart, Martinis, and More”. It’s a blast!
