James Cotton & Darrell Nulisch – Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.  I am so excited about this one.

The Friday night (October 18th) headliner at the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is the James Cotton Band featuring Darrell Nulisch on vocals.  This is a killer combination.

It’s not a stretch to say that James Cotton is a legendary harmonica player, playing for 12 years in Muddy Waters’ band, replacing Junior Wells, who himself followed Little Walter in the band.  He is one of the last of the generation from the golden era of Chicago Blues, particularly one of the legends associated with Chess Records.

Back in 1994, Cotton had a cancer scare and throat surgery.  It limited his singing to the point that he usually tours with a vocalist.  And the vocalist that he has on this tour would be worth seeing in his own right.

Nulisch was the original vocalist and harmonica player with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets.  (Their album, “Talk To You By Hand”, was the very first release on the now defunct New Orleans based Black Top Records label.)  He’s a killer harmonica player with a terrific voice.

It’s kind of like re-visiting the classic “Fathers and Sons” line-up from the late 60s … only this time around it’s more like grandfather and son.  Catch it while you can.
