Congo Square National Historic on Music Gumbo tourMusic Gumbo is a two-hour guided walking tour through the French Quarter, across Rampart Street and into Louis Armstrong Jazz Park to a place called Congo Square where American music was born. With every story your music tour guide will play a snippet of music related to the story, mostly original recordings.

The Music Gumbo tour tells a surprising 300-year history of New Orleans’ birthing of jazz, nurturing of rhythm ‘n’ blues and the hits from America first rock ‘n’ roll recording studio. The music that made that Gumbo reaches back a century and a half earlier to 1750s French colonists granting slaves freedom on Sundays. 18th, 19th and 20th – opera, gospel and songs sung by bawdy sailors in saloons near the Mississippi River docks.  The most amazing story is that it all happened in the French Quarter and surrounding neighborhoods.
